Knowledge Test Appointment (CLP Application) — What to Bring

This is your first DPS visit — the one where you pass your written knowledge tests and walk out with your Commercial Learner's Permit. Every item below marked Required must be present. Missing any one of them means being turned away.

Identity & License ALL REQUIRED

  • Valid Texas driver license (Class C) — current, non-expired, Texas-issued. Out-of-state licenses must be transferred to Texas before applying for a CDL.
  • Social Security Number verification — Social Security card, W-2, pay stub showing full SSN, or other official SSN documentation accepted by DPS.

Texas Residency 2 DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

Both documents must show your name and Texas residential address. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted. Documents must be dated within 90 days.

  • Utility bill (electric, gas, water, cable, or internet) in your name
  • Bank or financial institution statement
  • Mortgage statement or property tax bill
  • Lease or rental agreement (signed, with property address)
  • Pay stub from a Texas employer showing your address
  • Government agency mail addressed to you at your Texas address
  • Voter registration card showing your Texas address

Citizenship / Legal Presence 1 DOCUMENT REQUIRED

  • U.S. birth certificate (original or certified copy)

  • U.S. Naturalization Certificate (Form N-550 or N-570)
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) — for lawful permanent residents
  • Valid unexpired foreign passport with valid I-94 and qualifying visa

Medical & Training Documents REQUIRED

  • DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) — paper copy. DPS checks the FMCSA registry electronically, but bring a physical copy as backup. Allow 24–48 hours after your DOT physical for the results to appear in the system before your DPS appointment.
  • ELDT theory completion — submitted electronically to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry by your provider. No paper certificate needed. Confirm your provider submitted it before your appointment.

Payment REQUIRED

  • $25 CLP fee — accepted payment: credit card, debit card, cash, check drawn on a Texas bank, or money order. DPS does not accept out-of-state checks.

ELDT paper certificate — you do not need one. Many applicants arrive at DPS with a printed completion certificate from their online ELDT theory course. DPS checks the FMCSA TPR electronically — what matters is that your provider submitted your completion, not whether you have a printout. If you want peace of mind, bring the printout anyway as a reference document if there's any system discrepancy to follow up on.

Skills Test Appointment — What to Bring

This is your second DPS interaction — either at a DPS office, a DPS mobile testing location, or a TPST school. You must arrive with the following:

Skills Test Documents ALL REQUIRED

  • Current valid Texas CLP — your Commercial Learner's Permit, unexpired, matching the class of CDL you're testing for. If your CLP is expired, you cannot take the skills test.
  • ELDT behind-the-wheel completion — submitted electronically by your school to the FMCSA TPR. DPS checks this record directly. Confirm your school submitted it before your appointment date.
  • A qualifying commercial motor vehicle — you must bring your own CMV matching the class of CDL you're obtaining. DPS and most TPST testing sites do not supply vehicles. Confirm with your testing site whether they provide a vehicle (some CDL schools that are TPST testers use their own training trucks for student testing).
