Retake Policy — New York's Rule That Matters Most
Knowledge tests: no limit, no waiting period. If you fail a New York CDL knowledge test, you can retake it as soon as the same day if your DMV office has availability. There is no cap on attempts and no mandatory waiting period between tries — a genuinely more forgiving policy than states like California, which caps knowledge test attempts at three within 12 months before requiring you to restart the application.
Road test: fee covers two attempts. The road test fee you pay covers two attempts. If you fail both, you pay again and schedule a new appointment. There's no overall cap on total attempts, but budget for a new fee once your first two are used.
