Georgia made a significant, dated change to medical certification a year before this guide was written — and there's a real, specific gap in Georgia's waiver system most drivers don't know about until they need it. Here's exactly how the current system works.

The June 2025 Electronic-Only Transition
Effective June 18, 2025, Georgia DDS stopped accepting medical certificates through any manual channel — no more mail, fax, email, online upload, or in-person submission at a Customer Service Center. Your medical examiner must transmit your certificate electronically to DDS through the FMCSA National Registry directly.
This is a genuine change from how the process worked previously, and it means you don't need to hand-deliver anything to DDS yourself — but you do need to confirm directly with your medical examiner that they're using the correct electronic transmission channel before you leave your appointment.
Keep a personal copy anyway. DDS explicitly encourages CDL drivers to keep a copy of their valid medical certificate with them at all times, even though the official record now transmits electronically — employers may also ask to see it directly.

The Diabetic Waiver Gap
Georgia itself does not issue diabetic waivers — this catches drivers off guard. If you're on insulin and need a waiver to drive commercially, Georgia DDS cannot grant one. Only the FMCSA can, and only for drivers operating in interstate commerce. If you're intrastate-only, no diabetic waiver pathway exists at either the state or federal level under this specific program.
