Only an examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners can perform this exam. PennDOT only accepts medical certification completed by an FMCSA-certified examiner.
Pennsylvania's Self-Certification Requirement
Pennsylvania CDL applicants must complete a Self-Certification identifying their type of commercial driving — interstate, intrastate, exempt, or non-excepted — alongside their medical certification status. This is part of the standard PennDOT CDL process, distinct from the exam itself.
How Your Certificate Reaches PennDOT
Your Medical Examiner's Certificate is generally submitted electronically by your examiner. Still, confirming with PennDOT that it's been properly added to your record is worthwhile, especially close to a renewal deadline.
The FMCSA Clearinghouse
A "prohibited" Clearinghouse status blocks CDL processing nationwide, including in Pennsylvania. If the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse reports a driver as prohibited from operating a CMV, no state can issue, renew, upgrade, or transfer that driver's CDL until the driver completes the federal return-to-duty process.
