Michigan's timeline includes a genuine advantage: a CLP can be issued before ELDT is fully completed, potentially shortening the path for most applicants.

The 14-Day Floor
No matter how quickly you prepare, Michigan's 14-day CLP hold sets a hard floor on the total timeline. You cannot test before this period ends, regardless of how ready you feel.
Third-Party Scheduling Lead Time
Skills tests must be scheduled at least 2 days in advance through an approved third-party business. Since Michigan doesn't administer skills tests at Secretary of State offices, identifying and contacting the right testing business well before you're ready helps avoid unnecessary delay.
The ELDT Timing Advantage
Michigan allows a CLP to be issued before ELDT is fully completed for most applicants, a genuine timing advantage compared to states requiring ELDT completion first. Hazmat applicants are the exception: the hazmat portion of ELDT must be completed before the hazmat knowledge test specifically.
